What is a Backwater Valve?

A professionally installed backwater valve (also known as a backflow valve or sewer backup valve) is your first line of defence. A mainline backwater valve prevents sewage from flowing back into your home during a sewer backup by blocking the reverse flow. It functions as a one-way gate, letting water exit but closing if it detects reverse flow toward your property.

This valve is handy during heavy rainstorms or if there’s a blockage in the municipal sewer system, which could otherwise lead to sewage flooding your basement or lower floors. Installing a mainline backwater valve is a critical safeguard against water damage and contamination from sewer backups.

Happy to have found Alex to help me with my leaky shower and tub after moving into a new apartment. I had reached out to a couple plumbers overnight but he was the only one I heard back from, and was even able to come first thing that morning. Honest, very helpful and knowledgeable, and even went above and beyond to install my new showerhead for me. Highly recommend and will absolutely work with him again. Thank you Alex!!

We reached out to Alex because of a leaky kitchen faucet and toilet issues in our townhouse nearby. Alex provided us with outstanding service, detailed explanations of what needed to be done and gave us options of how to proceed. Our tenants, who dealt with him in person, said he was very respectful and polite and left the place very clean after the job was done. We were very grateful for his time and would use him again without hesitation!

I was at Home Depot buying a toilet filler valve, and I randomly met Alex in the aisle. He was a big help explaining how I can install it myself. When I got to my car, he made a point to come over to me and give me his card so if I had any questions while I was installing it I could ask him. I did have to ask him a question and he was very polite and not upset that I called. He didn’t have to do that so I found that very kind of him. He had nothing to benefit from this. Such a gentleman! If I ever need a plumber, he’s going to be the guy call.

How Does a Backwater Valve Work?

Backwater valves are designed to allow water and waste to flow out of your home’s plumbing system while preventing it from coming back in. During heavy rainfall or sewer blockages, there is often a reverse flow of sewage that can flood your home. The valve closes automatically when it detects the reverse flow, stopping sewage from entering your property.

The backwater valves act as a one-way gate for your pipes—keeping dirty water out of your home and ensuring your family stays safe.

Signs You Need Backwater Valve Installation

A backwater valve is crucial for homeowners who want to prevent sewage from backing up into their homes. Some signs you might need to install a backwater valve include:

    • Frequent Sewer Backups: If your neighbourhood experiences heavy rainfall or is prone to sewer backups, it’s a sign you need protection.
    • Basement Flooding: Sewage flooding your basement during storms or heavy rainfall is a serious health and safety concern.
    • Old Plumbing Systems: Older homes often have outdated sewer systems and are more vulnerable to backups. Having a backwater valve installed is a wise choice.
    • Nearby Sewer Main Blockages: If your area has frequent sewer blockages or drain issues, a backwater valve helps prevent future damage.

    FAQs Backwater Valve System

A backwater valve is a device that prevents sewage from flowing back into your home during a sewer backup. It’s essential for protecting your home from flood damage, especially in areas prone to heavy rainfall or where the sewer system is older or overloaded.

A backwater valve allows wastewater to flow out of your home’s plumbing system but automatically shuts off when it detects sewage trying to flow back in. This one-way gate prevents sewer backups from entering your basement or lower floors.

Consider installing a backwater valve system if your area experiences frequent sewer backups, basement flooding during storms, or if your home is located in a low-lying area with an outdated sewer system.

Backwater valve installation typically takes 4 to 6 hours, depending on the complexity of the excavation and plumbing setup. Our plumbers ensure the process is efficient, minimizing disruption to your home.

Yes, backwater valves require periodic maintenance to ensure they work properly. It’s recommended to check and clean the valve at least once a year, or after heavy rainfall, to prevent blockages that could impede its function.

Typically located in the mainline sewer of your home, often on the basement floor, where it connects to the municipal drainage system. It is installed to prevent sewage from flowing back into the house during a backup.

While some homeowners may attempt DIY installations, it’s highly recommended to hire a licensed plumber near you for proper backwater valve installation. A professional ensures the valve is correctly placed, works efficiently, and meets city regulations for rebate eligibility.

If not installed properly, a backwater valve may fail to prevent sewage backups or could even block your drainage system. That’s why it’s important to hire experienced professionals for installation and follow local building codes.

Do you notice slow drainage, gurgling noises from your drains, or sewage odours? Then it’s a sign a backwater valve may not be working correctly and needs services. Regular plumbing inspections and maintenance are crucial to keeping it in optimal condition.
